What Is a Macchiato? Real vs. the Chain Version
Macchiato means 'stained' in Italian, and the real thing is tiny: an espresso with just a spot of milk. It's very different from the large, syrupy drinks some chains sell under the name.
The traditional espresso macchiato
It's a single or double shot of espresso 'stained' with a small dollop of foamed milk. The milk softens the edge of the espresso without hiding it, so you still taste the coffee clearly. It's small, quick, and meant to be enjoyed in a few sips.
Why the chain version is different
A 'caramel macchiato' and similar drinks are closer to a flavored latte: lots of milk, syrup, and sauce. There's nothing wrong with them, but they're a different drink from the classic macchiato.
How to order what you want
If you want the small, coffee-forward classic, ask for an espresso macchiato. If you want something sweet and milky, say so plainly and we'll build it the way you like.
Come try one in person, we're on Main Street in downtown McAllen, Mon–Sat 10a–6p.
