Affogato: The Easiest Fancy Dessert You'll Ever Order
Two ingredients, thirty seconds, and it feels like a celebration. The affogato is Italy's greatest little trick.
What it is
Affogato means "drowned" in Italian: a scoop of gelato, drowned in a hot shot of espresso poured over the top. That's the whole thing. The espresso melts the edges into a warm-cold, bitter-sweet swirl you eat with a spoon.
Why it works so well
It's perfect contrast, hot and cold, bitter and sweet, silky and crisp, all at once. Dessert and coffee in one glass, so you don't have to choose after lunch. And the espresso keeps it from ever getting too sweet.
How to order it
Classic is espresso over a plain, milky gelato like café or fior di latte. Feeling it? Try it over pistachio or stracciatella. Ours is $7, the smartest small indulgence on the menu.
